On a tragic day in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the life of a young Black/African American woman was cut short by violence. Twenty-four-year-old Kimberly LaShawn Hopkins was fatally shot on April 14, 2020, in an incident that also left a second victim with devastating injuries. The shooting occurred near North Peoria and Highway 75, where responding Tulsa police officers discovered the grim scene.
Upon their arrival, officers found Kimberly Hopkins with fatal gunshot wounds.
Alongside her, they found Bobby Mayfield, who had sustained severe injuries that would later result in paralysis. The violent act sent ripples of grief and shock through the Tulsa community, prompting a thorough investigation by law enforcement to bring the person responsible to justice.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to a suspect, Emeir Brown. At the time a warrant was issued for his arrest in connection with the shooting, Brown was already in custody on unrelated charges. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Kimberly Hopkins and the attempted murder of Bobby Mayfield. As the case against Brown proceeds through the legal system, the community continues to mourn the senseless loss of a young life and hope for justice for the victims.
