On January 13, 2019, Sergeant Wytasha Lamar Carter of the Birmingham Police Department was fatally shot while on duty. Sgt. Carter and another officer, Lucas Allums, were investigating a series of car break-ins in the 900 block of a bar in downtown Birmingham. During their attempt to arrest two men involved in the break-ins, the officers were shot.
