On May 31, 2019, at approximately 9:26 p.m., 36-year-old Gewayne Dyrelle Gilbert was fatally shot outside Ensley Seafood, located in the 3100 block of Ensley Avenue in Birmingham, Alabama. Responding to a ShotSpotter alert and reports of a person down, officers from the West Precinct arrived to find Gilbert unresponsive in the parking lot, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue, along with the Jefferson County Coroner, pronounced him deceased at the scene.
