On January 20, 2021, in Birmingham, Alabama, 21-year-old Eusi Malik Kater Jr. was fatally shot during an encounter with law enforcement. Around 2:14 p.m., officers from the Birmingham Police Department's South Precinct responded to reports of gunfire in the 100 block of 5th Avenue Southwest. Upon arrival, they encountered Kater, who fled on foot. During the pursuit, Kater reportedly fired multiple shots at the officers.
