In the summer of 2019, the life of 17-year-old Anthony Scott was tragically cut short in Scottsboro, Alabama. On the evening of Wednesday, July 3rd, a gathering of teenagers took a fatal turn. While with several other teens and playing with handguns, one of the weapons discharged, striking Anthony in the face. He died from his injuries the following day, on July 4, 2019.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a troubling backstory.
The handgun used in the incident was reportedly one of several that had been stolen in a recent string of weapon thefts in the area. The gathering where the shooting occurred took place at a home off of Highway 35. Friends and teammates of Anthony, who had been a football player at Section High School until the spring of that year, were left in shock and disbelief at the news of his sudden and violent death.
In the aftermath of the tragic event, Scottsboro Police arrested 16-year-old Jacob Isbell in connection with the shooting. Isbell was initially charged as an adult with assault. Authorities indicated that more charges could be forthcoming as the investigation progressed. He was also facing charges for breaking and entering into motor vehicles, which was connected to the theft of the guns. The incident was described by police as an accidental shooting.
Family and friends mourned the loss of a young man they remembered as a hard worker and a great teammate with an awesome personality. His funeral services were scheduled for Saturday, July 13, 2019, at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Dutton, with burial to follow in Caperton Cemetery in Flat Rock.
