On the evening of Friday, April 7, 2023, a fatal encounter unfolded at a business off Veterans Drive in Scottsboro, Alabama, resulting in the death of 33-year-old Aaron Morris Nix, a Black male. The incident led to the arrest of 25-year-old Jerry Carl Hicks, who was subsequently charged with murder.
Scottsboro police responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 9:30 p.m. and discovered Nix deceased at the scene from a gunshot wound.
Following an initial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, authorities identified Hicks as the suspect and took him into custody. He was booked into the Jackson County Jail without bond.
However, the legal proceedings took a significant turn over a year later. On September 6, 2024, the murder indictment against Jerry Carl Hicks was dismissed. According to court documents, Hicks was granted immunity from criminal prosecution. The court determined that his actions were justified under Alabama's self-defense statute, which includes a 'Stand Your Ground' provision. This law allows individuals to use physical force in self-defense without the duty to retreat, provided they are legally justified in their use of that force.
