Grace Allison Smith, 34, was last seen on the evening of February 23, 2022, in Mason County, West Virginia. She had been at her mother's home in Gallipolis Ferry, where she did laundry and showered. During her visit, she had conversations with her parents and sister, expressing that she felt unsafe with the people she was associating with and agreed to enter a drug rehabilitation program the next day. She left her mother's residence around 8:30 p.m.
in her vehicle, a 2007 gold-colored Pontiac Grand Prix. Her mother gave her $20 for gas, and they made plans for her father to take her to the treatment facility the following day. At approximately 11:30 p.m. that night, her mother attempted to call her, but the call went straight to voicemail. Grace never showed up for her rehab appointment and has not been seen or heard from since.
Two days later, on February 25, 2022, Grace's car was found abandoned in the McClintic Wildlife Management Area, a location often referred to as the "TNT area," near Point Pleasant. The vehicle was located about ten miles from her mother's home. Discovered inside the car were most of her personal belongings, including her purse with her driver's license, clothing, and a bag of groceries that appeared to have expired. The keys to the vehicle were found lying on the hood, but her cell phone was missing. It was later confirmed that no calls were made from her phone after she left her mother's house.
At the time of her disappearance, Grace was reportedly homeless and living out of her car. She was a mother to a teenage son and a young daughter from her ex-husband, from whom she had divorced in 2021. Extensive searches of the McClintic Wildlife Management Area were conducted by law enforcement, utilizing helicopters, drones, and canine units, but no trace of Grace was found. The Mason County Sheriff's Department has stated they are investigating her disappearance as a possible homicide and have followed up on numerous tips.
