On August 8, 1963, Patrolman Wayne Clifton Boggus of the Scottsboro Police Department was fatally shot while performing his duties. Boggus, 41 years old at the time, had been with the Scottsboro Police Department for only four months, although he had a background in law enforcement, having previously served as a correctional officer for three years and as a veteran of the United States Marine Corps Reserve during World War II.
