In the summer of 2019, the life of 18-year-old James Edward Richardson III was tragically cut short in Montgomery, Alabama. On the evening of Sunday, July 21st, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of a local neighborhood. When the noise subsided, Richardson had been fatally wounded.
The shooting occurred at approximately 7:45 p.m. as Richardson was in a vehicle. It was then that another man, who investigators believe was known to the teenager, opened fire into the car, striking him.
Richardson was rushed to a nearby hospital, but despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries about three hours later.
The investigation into the death of the young man quickly led authorities to a suspect. The following day, law enforcement officials arrested 23-year-old Kardarius Deitra Fountain, a resident of Georgia. Fountain was taken into custody and formally charged with capital murder in connection with the death of James Richardson III.
Further investigation into Fountain's background revealed a history of legal troubles in his home state. He had been a wanted man in Clayton County, Georgia, for nearly a year prior to the shooting in Montgomery. His previous charges in Georgia included aggravated assault, terroristic threats, and various weapon offenses, for which he had served time in prison. At the time of his arrest for Richardson's murder, Fountain was being held in the Montgomery County jail without bond.
