In August of 2018, a grim discovery was made in a quiet Birmingham, Alabama neighborhood that would unravel a story of violence and a desperate attempt to flee justice. A 3-year-old girl, her clothes stained with blood, was found wandering alone, leading concerned neighbors and eventually police to the home of her grandparents, 68-year-old Joe Holt and 67-year-old Mary Holt. Inside, the couple was found brutally stabbed to death, their lives tragically cut short in what should have been the safety of their own home. The little girl, who had been in the care of her grandmother, had been tied up with a phone cord and left in a bathtub while the horrific events unfolded.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on two individuals who had been staying at a halfway house across the street from the victims. Kristen Leigh Gullion, a 30-year-old female from Cullman, and her 23-year-old boyfriend, Zachary Phillips of Arab, soon became the primary suspects. The pair had vanished, but a crucial piece of evidence would lead law enforcement right to them: the Holts' stolen gray 2012 Honda Civic. The vehicle was spotted in south Florida, setting off a multi-agency effort to apprehend the couple.
Gullion was the first to be taken into custody. She was found with the stolen car in Miami Beach and was initially arrested on an unrelated outstanding warrant from Cullman County. When questioned about the vehicle, she claimed it belonged to a friend and, on the advice of her father, stated she was told to 'keep her mouth shut.' A short time later, Phillips was apprehended in Hollywood, Florida, after a police chase. Inside the recovered vehicle, authorities discovered clothing belonging to the Holts, their car registration, and a pair of boots in a military bag that bore the name of one of the victims' sons.
Both Gullion and Phillips were extradited back to Alabama to face the consequences of their alleged actions. They were each charged with two counts of capital murder in connection with the slayings of Joe and Mary Holt, as well as burglary. Phillips faced an additional charge of first-degree kidnapping due to the restraining of the young granddaughter. Prosecutors announced their intention to seek the death penalty for both suspects. Gullion and Phillips were booked into the Jefferson County Jail and held without bond as they awaited trial for the brutal crimes that shocked a community and left a family shattered.
