In the late summer of 2019, a domestic altercation in Hollywood, Alabama, ended in the tragic death of Candus Bowes. On September 14th of that year, law enforcement responded to a call on Poplar Street and discovered a grim scene. Inside the residence, blood spatter marked the living room floor and both the storm and main doors. A gun and a spent shell casing were found near the blood.
Jeremiah Adam Nix, identified as Bowes's longtime partner, was present at the scene.
He initially claimed that after a mild argument upon his return from four-wheeler riding with another woman and a friend, he went to the bedroom to play video games. He told investigators he then heard a gunshot and emerged to find Bowes standing from the couch, gasping and coughing up blood before she went outside to the porch.
However, the evidence at the scene told a different story. The investigation later revealed that Bowes had been shot through the right side of her rib cage, with the bullet traveling through her body and lodging in her bra strap on the other side. Three 911 calls were made as the emergency unfolded, and during one, Bowes's and Nix's eldest daughter could be heard relaying information and counting CPR compressions in a desperate attempt to save her mother's life.
Jeremiah Nix, 32 years old at the time, was arrested for the murder of Candus Bowes and booked into the Jackson County Jail. His trial took a dramatic turn on the third morning when he failed to appear in court. After being brought in by the Jackson County Sheriff's Office and conferring with his attorneys, Nix pleaded guilty to the charge of murder.
In March 2023, Jeremiah Adam Nix was sentenced to 60 years in prison for the shooting death of Candus Bowes. In addition to his prison sentence, he was ordered to pay substantial fines, including restitution for Bowes's funeral expenses. He will be eligible for parole after serving 15 years of his sentence.
