In the winter of 2020, the city of Birmingham, Alabama, was unsettled by a string of violence that claimed the life of 25-year-old Derrick Marks, Jr. On February 25th, Marks was found the victim of a fatal shooting, a loss that deeply impacted his family and the wider community. His death came at a particularly painful time, as he was grieving the loss of his best friend, who had been shot and killed just hours earlier.
