In the late afternoon of March 29, 2020, a burst of gunfire shattered the Sunday peace at a gas station on Willow Lane in Greenville, Alabama, leading to the death of 27-year-old DeAndre Powell. A Black male, Powell was a graduate of Greenville High School's class of 2011 and was known as a flourishing rap artist. The Greenville Police Department responded to reports of the shooting at approximately 4:45 p.m.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered a chaotic scene.
One man was found in the parking lot holding a rifle and was taken into custody without incident. Shortly thereafter, a Butler County Sheriff's deputy intercepted a vehicle heading towards the Regional Medical Center of Central Alabama. Inside this vehicle were two individuals, one of whom was DeAndre Powell, suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite being rushed to the hospital for treatment, Powell succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation that followed pointed to an ongoing dispute as the catalyst for the deadly confrontation. The Greenville Police Department's investigative work quickly led to the identification of three suspects. Two of the men, 22-year-old Joshua Seawright and 25-year-old Rondivious Loveless, both from Greenville, were apprehended shortly after the shooting. The third suspect, 22-year-old Antuwan Thompson, also from Greenville, turned himself in to the authorities the following day. All three men were subsequently charged with murder in connection with DeAndre Powell's death.
