Late on the night of November 29, 2014, a burst of gunfire shattered the stillness around Wimberly Street in Greenville, Alabama. Calls reached police at about 11:20 p.m., and when officers arrived they learned the violence had already spilled beyond the street: two wounded men had been rushed toward help, the urgency of the ride carrying the unspoken fear that one of them might not make it.
