In the early morning hours of August 9, 2020, the life of 25-year-old Cortez Fitzgerald Hill was tragically cut short in Dothan, Alabama. At approximately 2:00 a.m., Dothan Police Department officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 100 block of West Powell Street. Upon their arrival, they discovered Hill unresponsive in his vehicle.
Despite the immediate life-saving efforts of both the police and medics at the scene, Cortez Fitzgerald Hill succumbed to his injuries.
The preliminary investigation revealed that he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The area was reportedly crowded at the time of the shooting, and authorities began an active investigation, urging anyone with information to come forward.
Following an investigation by the Dothan Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division, a suspect was identified. On August 20, 2020, investigators secured a warrant for the arrest of Demingus Montez Humphrey, a 26-year-old from Troy, Alabama. With the assistance of the US Marshal's Fugitive Task Force and the Troy Police Department, Humphrey was apprehended in Troy on the same day. He was subsequently charged with Capital Murder in connection with the death of Cortez Hill.
