On the first day of the new year, a tragic event marked the beginning of 2021 in Birmingham, Alabama. Carl Miserendino, III, a 35-year-old White/Caucasian male, was found deceased, becoming the city's first homicide victim of the year. The discovery was made in the evening, at approximately 9:05 p.m., in the Inglenook area of the city. Officers from the Birmingham Police Department responded to a call about a person down at a residence located at 4040 40th Avenue North.
Upon their arrival, they found Carl Miserendino, III unresponsive. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel were also at the scene and pronounced him dead. Evidence at the location indicated that his death was the result of a homicide.
The investigation into the death of Miserendino, a financial advisor, quickly led detectives to a suspect. Within days, investigators identified 22-year-old Issiah Williams White as the individual believed to be responsible. On January 6, 2021, a capital murder warrant was issued for White's arrest. However, he was not immediately located, prompting a search that extended beyond the state of Alabama. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies across state lines proved to be crucial in the apprehension of the suspect.
Nearly a month after the incident, on January 28, 2021, authorities located and arrested Issiah Williams White in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Miserendino's car was also recovered in Florida. Following his arrest, White was held in the Broward County jail. During an interview with a Birmingham Police Department detective, White reportedly admitted to shooting and killing Miserendino. He claimed the shooting was accidental and occurred while he was attempting to steal Miserendino's vehicle because he needed a car to get back to Florida. White faced extradition to Alabama to be held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond on the capital murder charge.
