In the late afternoon of Saturday, August 23, 2025, the life of 16-year-old George Camarius Daniel was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire at a Birmingham, Alabama, apartment complex. A Black male and a junior at Huffman High School, Daniel was at the Springville Landing Apartments on Huffman Road when the shooting occurred.
Around 4 p.m., Birmingham police and fire rescue were dispatched to the scene, initially responding to a report of a traffic accident.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Daniel unresponsive on the ground outside a vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the efforts of emergency personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:30 p.m. Another teenage male was also wounded in the incident and was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators believe several people had gathered at the apartment complex before the shooting, though a motive for the violence has not been publicly disclosed. The investigation quickly led to a suspect, and on the same day as the shooting, police arrested 20-year-old Adrian Sikweya Nyaberi near the scene. Nyaberi was subsequently charged with capital murder, attempted murder, and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. He is being held without bond at the Jefferson County Jail.
