Adam T. Spaid, a 28-year-old resident of Warren, Ohio, tragically lost his life on February 5, 2023, during a home invasion and attempted robbery at his Milton Street SE residence. The incident began when Christian Chaney, who was 17 at the time, approached Spaid's home holding an orange Grub Hub delivery bag as a ruse to lure out the occupants. Shortly after, Chaney and three other men forcibly entered the home, leading to the fatal shooting of Spaid.
Following the incident, law enforcement quickly identified and apprehended suspects involved in the crime. Christian Chaney, from Struthers, was arrested and initially charged with aggravated murder, aggravated burglary, and aggravated robbery, all with firearm specifications. Chaney later accepted a plea deal, and his charge of aggravated murder was amended to involuntary manslaughter. He was sentenced to 13 to 18 years in state prison, followed by five years of post-release control.
The man believed to have pulled the trigger, Ronieque Requel of Youngstown, was also arrested and brought to trial. A jury found Requel guilty of two counts of aggravated murder, one count of aggravated robbery, one count of aggravated burglary, one count of intimidation (all with firearm specifications), as well as charges of receiving stolen property and illegal weapon possession. The jury deliberations lasted only about an hour before reaching a verdict. Requel, 26 years old at the time of sentencing, received a life sentence without the possibility of parole for his role in Adam Spaid's murder.
The tragic death of Adam Spaid and the subsequent legal proceedings highlight the devastating consequences of violent crime in the community. The swift action of law enforcement and the justice system resulted in the conviction of two individuals directly involved in the fatal home invasion, bringing some measure of closure to the case.
