In the winter of 2021, the life of 24-year-old Mariah Patton, a Black woman from Montgomery, Alabama, was tragically cut short. On January 12, she was found with gunshot wounds outside an apartment complex in the city. Despite the immediate response and efforts of emergency personnel, she was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident that led to her death was reportedly the culmination of a domestic dispute.
