On a cold evening in Montgomery, Alabama, the life of Dana Martin, a 31-year-old Black transgender woman, was tragically cut short. On January 6, 2019, first responders were dispatched to the 3900 block of Brewer Road after reports of a vehicle crash. There, in a roadside ditch, they discovered Martin's car. Inside, they found her with a fatal gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators believe she was shot while driving, near where her car was ultimately found.
Dana, who resided in Hope Hull, just outside of Montgomery, was remembered by friends as a beloved individual. Her death was the first known homicide of a transgender person in the United States in 2019. The Montgomery Police Department confirmed they were investigating her death as a criminal homicide.
Despite the ongoing investigation, no arrests have been made in connection with her murder, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or a motive in the case. The circumstances surrounding her death remain unsolved. Friends of Martin noted a tragic event in her past, stating that she had been shot and lost an eye in a previous incident in 2015. They reported that the man responsible for that shooting had been tried and imprisoned, and was reportedly released from custody just days before her death. However, law enforcement has not announced any connection between this individual and Martin's murder.
