On the evening of January 27, 2021, 19-year-old Mikel Ja'Darius Pickens was involved in a shooting incident at the Urban Market Grocery Store in Bessemer, Alabama. Authorities responded to the scene around 7:50 p.m., where Pickens had sustained gunshot wounds during an assault. He was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where he was pronounced dead early the following morning.
