Police Officer Rufus Shelley Kendrick, aged 44, lost his life in the line of duty on July 10, 1945. At the time of the incident, Officer Kendrick was off duty but still dedicated to his responsibilities as a law enforcement officer. He encountered a suspect in an alley who was wanted for assaulting a woman. Despite being off duty, Officer Kendrick decided to take action and parked his car, leaving his 5-year-old son inside, before approaching the suspect to make the arrest.
