In the summer of 2021, the life of 17-year-old Leiah Holmes was tragically cut short in Montgomery, Alabama. On Monday, July 12, 2021, the promising young woman, a cheerleader at Alabama Christian Academy who was about to enter her senior year, was killed in a violent intrusion into her own home. The incident prompted a homicide investigation by local police.
The community mourned the loss of the teenager, remembered as a sweet, energetic, and loving individual.
Funeral services were held on Friday, July 23, 2021, at The Southside Church of Christ in Montgomery, with her burial taking place at St. John A.M.E. cemetery in Tuskegee.
The investigation into her death led to the identification of a suspect, Daiyon El-Amin. Evidence revealed that El-Amin had driven from Evergreen with the intent to break into Holmes's residence. In a significant development in the case, El-Amin pleaded guilty to the murder of Leiah Holmes.
In April 2025, Daiyon El-Amin appeared in court for sentencing. As a result of his guilty plea for the murder of the 17-year-old, he was sentenced to serve life in prison, bringing a measure of judicial closure to the tragic case.
