On July 17, 2021, in Montgomery, Alabama, 3-year-old Jeremiah Chappell was fatally shot while riding in the back seat of his mother's car. Authorities believe that Jeremiah was not the intended target of the shooting.

Following the incident, Montgomery police charged 35-year-old Orlando Meghell Harriell with capital murder in connection with Jeremiah's death. Harriell was taken into custody and placed in the Montgomery County Detention Facility.
