In the Wylam neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama, on the afternoon of July 19, 2021, a life was tragically cut short. LaPez-Monte Alveraz Reddrick, a 47-year-old Black male, was found unresponsive inside a residence on Erie Street. The events leading to this grim discovery began to unfold around 3:30 p.m. when Birmingham Police Department officers were dispatched to the home following a report of a person shot.
Upon their arrival, officers made their way into the residence and found Mr.
Reddrick in the dining room. It was immediately apparent that he was beyond help. Personnel from Birmingham Fire and Rescue soon arrived at the scene and officially pronounced him deceased. The preliminary stages of the investigation pointed towards a homicide, prompting a full inquiry into the circumstances of his death.
Witnesses at the scene provided crucial initial details for investigators. They reported hearing a heated argument emanating from within the house just moments before the fatal shot was fired. In the chaotic moments that followed, an unidentified Black male was seen fleeing from the back of the residence. This individual quickly became a person of interest in the case. Detectives were able to obtain images of this man, capturing his presence at the back door of the home only minutes before Mr. Reddrick was killed.
In the days that followed, the Birmingham Police Department's Homicide Unit continued to piece together the events of that afternoon. They publicly released the images of the man seen leaving the scene, appealing to the community for assistance in identifying him. At the time, no arrests had been made, and a suspect had not been officially named. The Jefferson County Medical Examiner's Office conducted an autopsy to formally determine the cause of death as authorities continued their search for answers and justice for LaPez-Monte Alveraz Reddrick.
