On August 17, 2021, at approximately 2:20 a.m., Birmingham North Precinct officers responded to reports of a shooting at the King's Inn hotel, located at 1313 3rd Avenue North. Upon arrival, they discovered 39-year-old Hernando Retion McJunkins lying unresponsive on the walkway, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel pronounced him deceased at the scene.
