In the late summer afternoon of September 3, 2022, a wave of violence shattered the calm of a Birmingham, Alabama neighborhood, claiming the life of 35-year-old Justin Jarell Taylor. At approximately 1:45 p.m., the sound of rapid gunfire echoed through the 4200 block of Inglenook Street. When the barrage of bullets ceased, Taylor and another man, 32-year-old Rodriquez Powell, were left unresponsive inside a vehicle.

Taylor was in the driver's seat, and Powell was in the front passenger seat, both having sustained gunshot wounds. While Powell was pronounced deceased at the scene, emergency medical personnel rushed Taylor to UAB Hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. Despite their efforts, his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The preliminary investigation painted a chilling picture of a targeted attack. It is believed that another vehicle pulled alongside the one occupied by Taylor and Powell, and at least one occupant unleashed a torrent of over twenty rounds before speeding away. The incident marked a grim milestone for the city, as Taylor and Powell became its 99th and 100th homicide victims of the year.
As of the fall of 2023, the case of the double homicide of Justin Jarell Taylor and Rodriquez Powell remains unsolved. Despite the tragic loss and the violence of the crime, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The Birmingham Police Department has continued to appeal to the public for any information that could lead to a breakthrough in the investigation and bring a measure of justice to the families of the two men whose lives were cut short on that September day.
