In the early hours of May 5, 2024, a mass shooting occurred in Birmingham, Alabama, resulting in the death of 24-year-old David Westbrook from Wartrace, Tennessee. The incident took place shortly after 2 a.m. in the 700 and 800 blocks of 3rd Avenue West. Responding officers discovered a white sedan that had crashed into a utility pole; inside, Westbrook was found with a fatal gunshot wound. Authorities believe he was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.
