In the fading daylight of an October evening in Mobile, Alabama, a sequence of events unfolded that would end a life and lead to a swift arrest. On Tuesday, October 19, 2021, at around 7:30 p.m., the sound of gunfire shattered the evening calm in the vicinity of Michigan Avenue and Melrose Street. Responding to the reports, Mobile Police officers were dispatched to the area. Their investigation led them to the 1200 block of Rev. A.T.
Days Street, where a car had crashed into a church.
Inside the vehicle, officers made a grim discovery. The driver, 53-year-old Samuel Bishop, a male, was found deceased. It was not the crash that claimed his life; an apparent gunshot wound was the cause of death. The scene painted a tragic picture of the final moments of Mr. Bishop's life, ending abruptly against the wall of a sacred building. The Mobile Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into the violent death.
The investigation into Samuel Bishop's murder moved quickly. Within a couple of days, detectives were able to identify a suspect in the fatal shooting. Warrants were issued for the arrest of 28-year-old David Hardy. On Thursday, October 21, 2021, a coordinated effort between the U.S. Marshals Service and the Mobile Police Department's K9 Unit resulted in the location and apprehension of Hardy.
Following his capture, David Hardy was transported to the Metro Jail. He was formally charged with the murder of Samuel Bishop and the additional felony of shooting into an occupied vehicle. The arrest brought a swift, though not final, resolution to the initial phase of the investigation, leaving the community to mourn the loss of one of its members as the legal process against the accused began.
