An 80-year-old man, Samuel Owens Bell Jr., was fatally shot on November 23, 2021, while working as a security guard at a strip mine in Bessemer, Alabama. The tragic event prompted an investigation by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
During the course of their investigation, authorities identified a suspect in the killing. A day after the shooting, on November 24, 2021, the investigation led law enforcement officers to a vehicle believed to be connected to the homicide.
When deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver fled, initiating a police pursuit.
The chase came to an end in a wooded area. As law enforcement officers approached the vehicle, they discovered the male suspect inside had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No other suspects have been mentioned in connection with the death of Samuel Owens Bell Jr., and no arrests were made as the sole suspect took his own life.
