On the first day of the new year, a life was tragically cut short in Montgomery, Alabama. Christopher Damond Sankey, a 34-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on the afternoon of January 1, 2022. The incident, which marked one of the city's first homicides of the year, occurred around 3:11 p.m. in the vicinity of Mobile Road near Beecher Street.
Born in Montgomery on March 10, 1987, to Michael and Lakettia Abro, Christopher was a man known for his generous spirit and inquisitive mind.
He had attended Carver Senior High School and was remembered for his artistic skills. His sudden and violent death left a void in the lives of his family and friends, including his parents, siblings, and children.
In the wake of the shooting, the Montgomery Police Department launched an investigation that led to the identification of a suspect. Ja'Michael Tyler, a 32-year-old man, was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. The U.S. Marshals Task Force took Tyler into custody, and he was subsequently charged with capital murder. Following his arrest, he was placed in the Montgomery County Detention Facility.
