In the warm summer of 2022, just having entered his retirement, 67-year-old Rufus McCants was enjoying the slower pace of life in Montgomery, Alabama. A dedicated family man and hard worker, he often spent his newfound free time visiting with loved ones. On Sunday, July 3rd, those cherished moments were tragically cut short. While out visiting a friend, Mr. McCants, a Black male, was fatally shot.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain murky.
What is known is that after being shot, he managed to drive himself to a package store located on North Ripley Street. It was there, just before noon, that police and paramedics found him suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The sudden and violent nature of his death sent shockwaves through his family, turning their preparations for the Fourth of July into the somber task of planning a funeral.
In the years that have followed, the investigation into the death of Rufus McCants has unfortunately grown cold. Despite the efforts of the Montgomery Police Department, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with his murder. The case officially remains an unsolved homicide, a painful reality for his grieving family who continue to seek answers and justice. A reward of $2,500 has been offered by Central Alabama CrimeStoppers for any information that could lead to an arrest, a standing plea to the community for assistance in resolving this senseless act of violence.
