In the small town of Newville, Alabama, a story of jealousy and violence unfolded, culminating in the tragic death of 19-year-old Brittney Denise Corbitt. A female and a 2020 graduate of Headland High School, Brittney's life was cut short on the evening of February 17, 2022, in a hail of bullets on Ozark Road. The incident, which transpired near her grandfather's home around 6:30 p.m., was the grim conclusion to a heated dispute that had festered between two groups.
When law enforcement arrived at the chaotic scene, they found Brittney with a fatal gunshot wound to her chest.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a complex and bitter love triangle at its core. Tensions had reportedly escalated from an argument between Brittney and her girlfriend, who was also romantically involved with one of the suspects, Isaiah Jeremiah Hall Clyburn. This conflict set in motion a premeditated plan to ambush Brittney. On the night of the shooting, the car Brittney was in was followed by another vehicle. As Brittney's car pulled into a ditch, individuals from the pursuing vehicle opened fire, killing her and injuring two others.
The subsequent investigation led to the arrests of five individuals. Isaiah Jeremiah Hall Clyburn, then 20, and Farriea Nashawntia Norton, 19, were apprehended and faced charges including capital murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Also arrested were 21-year-old Austin Ricshard Al-Mon Daniels and Jayden Ashya Thomas, who was 19 at the time. In a startling turn, Thomas had identified herself as Brittney's best friend and was present during the fatal shooting, but was later implicated in the planning of the attack. A fifth suspect, Sharif Moore, was also charged. During court proceedings, several of the accused pointed to Clyburn as the orchestrator of the deadly encounter.
As the legal process moved forward, one of the accused, Sharif Moore, accepted responsibility for his role in the crime. He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of murder and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. The cases against the remaining suspects, including the alleged mastermind Isaiah Clyburn and Brittney's close friend Jayden Ashya Thomas, were bound over to a grand jury, leaving a community to grapple with the senseless loss of a young life and the betrayal that led to it.
