In the warmth of a Saturday afternoon, on March 5, 2022, the life of 13-year-old Jaylon Keith Palmore, a Black male, was tragically cut short. Jaylon was simply sitting on his front porch in the 7500 block of 1st Avenue South in Birmingham, Alabama, when the unthinkable happened. At approximately 2:50 p.m., gunfire erupted from two passing vehicles, shattering the peace of the neighborhood and forever altering the course of many lives.
Jaylon was struck by the hail of bullets, as was an adult male who was with him at the time.
Both victims were rushed to local hospitals for medical attention. The adult male, who had sustained a gunshot wound to his arm, was expected to make a recovery. For young Jaylon, however, the injuries were far too severe. He was transported to Children's of Alabama, where he ultimately succumbed to his wounds, leaving a community to grapple with the senseless loss of a promising young life. Jaylon was an eighth-grade student at Ossie Ware Mitchell Middle School, where he was remembered by those who knew him as a quiet, intelligent, and kind individual.
The Birmingham Police Department launched an extensive investigation into the shooting. Their efforts led them to a suspect, and on September 22, 2022, detectives presented their findings to the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office. Following this presentation, a capital murder warrant was issued for 30-year-old Tadarius Rashard Hammond. At the time the warrant was issued, Hammond was already incarcerated at the Jefferson County Jail on unrelated charges. The warrant charged him with capital murder for his alleged role in shooting from a vehicle, which resulted in Jaylon's death. Hammond remains in custody without bond, awaiting the progression of the legal process.
