A dispute that began with a heated exchange over a car horn in a parking lot tragically escalated, leading to the shooting death of Richard Matthew Smith, a 43-year-old white male, inside an Enterprise, Alabama, Walmart on October 5, 2022. The father of three was shot multiple times near the pharmacy section of the store following a confrontation that started as a road rage incident.
The altercation reportedly began when the driver of the other vehicle grew impatient and repeatedly
honked his horn. This led to a verbal exchange between the two men. Both parties then proceeded to park and entered the Walmart. Inside the store, the argument reignited. According to police reports, Smith brandished a knife, at which point the other man, who was armed with a handgun, opened fire.
Law enforcement officers who responded to the scene took the shooter into custody. At the time, authorities indicated that the shooting was likely an act of self-defense. However, Smith's family has publicly contested this narrative. They claim that the other man initiated the escalation by flashing his firearm first and that Smith, who they described as a peaceful person, was not the aggressor in the situation.
