In a tragic incident that unfolded on a Saturday evening in West Tuscaloosa, 66-year-old Mitchell Lewis lost his life in what authorities have described as a family-related shooting. The event took place on October 8, 2022, when police were called to a residence in the 3000 block of 20th Street around 6:15 p.m. following reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, officers discovered two men with gunshot wounds inside the home.
Both victims were immediately transported to DCH Regional
Medical Center for treatment. Mitchell Lewis, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The second victim, identified as 64-year-old Kenny Walker, passed away from his injuries early the following morning. The incident was one of several double homicides to occur in Tuscaloosa County that year.
The investigation into the double homicide led to the identification and arrest of a suspect, 30-year-old Devin Martez Quinzy. It was later revealed that one of the victims, Kenny Walker, was Quinzy's father. After the shooting, Quinzy reportedly fled the scene in a vehicle belonging to one of the victims. However, he later contacted the police by phone and surrendered himself to authorities in the parking lot of a local business on Highway 69 South.
Initially, Quinzy faced charges of one count of murder and one count of attempted murder. Following the death of the second victim, the charges against him were upgraded to capital murder. As a result of the capital murder charge, he was held without bond.
