In the early evening hours of a Friday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the life of 18-year-old Jalen Merriweather was tragically cut short. On February 9, 2018, the Holt High School senior found himself in a violent confrontation while defending his sister at the Broadmoore Gardens Apartments. Merriweather, a standout basketball player for the Holt Ironmen, intervened when a man began to pistol-whip his sister. In a heroic act to protect his sibling, the young man was shot in the chest.
Emergency services were called to the scene, but his injury proved fatal, and he died at approximately 6:45 p.m.
The senseless act of violence sent shockwaves through the community, robbing a family of a beloved son and brother who had a promising future ahead of him. Just a day before his death, Jalen and his basketball team were celebrating an area championship. He had plans to take the ACT and had saved money to buy his girlfriend of two years Valentine's Day flowers. His sudden and violent death left his family and friends grappling with an immense loss.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to a suspect. The Tuscaloosa Police Department identified Donald Robertson, a 50-year-old local contractor, as the man responsible for Jalen Merriweather's death. Robertson was subsequently arrested and charged with murder. In July 2019, to avoid a trial, Donald Robertson pleaded guilty to the murder of the teenage hero. He was sentenced to serve life in prison for the killing, bringing a measure of judicial closure to the family and community that mourned the loss of a brave young man who died protecting his sister.
