On a Friday afternoon in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the life of 42-year-old Roy Lamar Curry Jr. was tragically cut short. On June 20, 2025, while at his job at a car detailing shop on Skyland Boulevard, Curry was shot multiple times. Despite attempts to save him, his injuries proved fatal, and he died at the scene. The male victim’s death prompted a swift investigation by the Tuscaloosa Police and the Violent Crimes Unit.
Witnesses at the car detailing shop identified the shooter as a former
employee, 22-year-old Tyshawn Laquan Thompson. According to those present, Thompson returned to his former workplace and opened fire on Curry for reasons that remain unclear. After the shooting, Thompson fled the scene in a stolen vehicle, sparking an urgent search by law enforcement.
The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, utilizing their Cyber Intelligence officers, quickly located the stolen vehicle. Thompson was tracked as he traveled west through Mississippi. In a coordinated effort with the U.S. Marshals Task Force and Mississippi law enforcement agencies, Thompson was apprehended near Batesville, Mississippi, approximately 200 miles from the scene of the crime. The arrest occurred just over six hours after the shooting.
Investigators from the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit traveled to Panola County, Mississippi, to process the recovered vehicle for evidence and to interview Thompson. He is being held in Mississippi pending extradition to Tuscaloosa to face a murder charge.
