In a quiet neighborhood in west Tuscaloosa, a Sunday afternoon was shattered by violence that claimed the life of 62-year-old Joseph Earl Miller. On March 9, 2025, police responded to a shooting at Miller's home in the 3200 block of 18th Street. Inside, they found Miller deceased, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The investigation into the city's fifth homicide of the year quickly pointed to a suspect close to the family.
Investigators identified 41-year-old Andrew Wayne Hollie as
the primary suspect. Hollie was reportedly in a relationship with Miller's daughter and had allegedly been engaged in threatening and abusive behavior towards both her and her father in the week leading up to the fatal shooting. It is believed that Miller died while defending his daughter. Following the incident, Hollie fled the scene, prompting a search by law enforcement.
After processing the crime scene, interviewing witnesses, and executing search warrants, the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit secured a warrant for Hollie's arrest on a charge of capital murder. Early the next morning, the U.S. Marshals Task Force located and apprehended Hollie. He was subsequently booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail without bond. Funeral services for Mr. Miller were held on Saturday, March 22, 2025, with his burial in West Highland Memorial Gardens.
