In the early morning hours of October 22, 2022, a domestic altercation in Mobile, Alabama, tragically ended the life of 37-year-old Joshua Steven Barnickel. A male resident of Theodore, Alabama, Barnickel was a hardworking individual known for his love of family, friends, and the outdoors, where he enjoyed hunting and tending to his cows.
Responding to reports of a shooting, Mobile police discovered Joshua Barnickel at a residence, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. The initial investigation into the shooting pointed to a heartbreaking conclusion: the primary suspect was Joshua's own father.
John William Barnickel, then 66 years old, was taken into custody and subsequently charged with the murder of his son. The elder Barnickel was booked into the Mobile Metro Jail. In the ensuing legal proceedings, he pleaded not guilty to the charge and was later granted bond.
The case, however, would not reach a trial. On April 30, 2024, John William Barnickel Jr. passed away at the age of 68. His death occurred before any trial or conviction in the shooting death of his son, Joshua Steven Barnickel, leaving the legal resolution of the case permanently suspended.
