On December 13, 2022, at approximately 10:31 p.m., 19-year-old Jaemond Denard Smith was fatally shot near the intersection of 16th Street and 2nd Avenue in Phenix City, Alabama. Responding officers discovered Smith critically wounded at the scene, and he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
