In the early morning hours of New Year's Day 2023, the life of 26-year-old Deshawn Tanthony Eatmon, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The fatal incident unfolded at the Brookhaven Apartments located at 1310 James I. Harrison Jr. Parkway East. At approximately 2:20 a.m., Tuscaloosa Police officers were dispatched to the apartment complex following reports of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Eatmon deceased at the scene from gunshot wounds.
The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit promptly launched a homicide investigation. Detectives processed the crime scene for evidence and interviewed multiple witnesses to piece together the events that led to the deadly shooting. Their investigation quickly led to the identification of a suspect.
As a result of the swift investigation, 37-year-old Michael Terrell Charles was taken into custody. Charles was subsequently charged with one count of murder in connection with Eatmon's death. He was booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail and his bond was set at $1,000,000. Authorities have indicated that this was one of two separate and unrelated homicides that occurred in Tuscaloosa over the New Year's weekend. Funeral services for Deshawn Tanthony Eatmon were held on January 14, 2023, at Cornerstone Full Gospel Church, followed by his burial in Springhill Cemetery.
