On the evening of January 10, 2023, police in Huntsville, Alabama, responded to a call on the 200 block of Derrick Street around 9 p.m. Arriving at the scene, they discovered a man suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical services rushed him to a local hospital, but his injury proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead. The victim was later identified as Demetrius King, a 46-year-old man.
Huntsville Police Department investigators began working to uncover the circumstances that
led to the shooting. Their investigation determined that the suspects had been driving through the area when they discharged a weapon, striking and killing Mr. King. The evidence gathered by law enforcement soon pointed toward two individuals.
Following leads developed during the investigation, police arrested two suspects: John Brandon Boles, 29, and Ethan Lyn Bates, 20. Both men were subsequently charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of Demetrius King.
The case against the two men then proceeded to the courts. In late January 2023, court documents showed that Ethan Bates waived his right to a preliminary hearing, while John Boles was scheduled for a felon examination. On January 31, a court found there was probable cause in the case and bound it over to a grand jury. As of February 2023, criminal proceedings were pending.
