On a tragic Tuesday in Huntsville, Alabama, the life of 47-year-old Benjamin Ferguson was cut short in a senseless act of violence. The day, February 25, 2003, began like any other at a temporary employment agency, but it would end in a flurry of gunfire that left four men dead and another wounded. Ferguson was among those who perished, his life extinguished as he attempted to flee the chaos unfolding inside the building.
The gunman, identified as 23-year-old Emanuel Burl Patterson, had
apparently been involved in an argument over a CD player. Witnesses reported that after the dispute, Patterson made a chilling remark about settling the matter before pulling out a gun and opening fire indiscriminately. The lobby of the employment agency transformed into a scene of terror as Patterson shot at those around him. Billy Knox Jr., 22, and his father, Billy Knox Sr., 61, were the first to be gunned down inside the building.
As panic erupted, Benjamin Ferguson ran for his life, but he was fatally shot as he descended the front steps of the agency. Another man, 46-year-old David Seiler from Tennessee, was also shot on the steps and later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. A fifth man, Royce Henderson, 46, was shot in the leg but managed to survive the horrific ordeal. Following the deadly rampage, Patterson fled the scene and barricaded himself in his apartment. Police quickly surrounded the building, evacuating nearby residents. An eight-hour standoff ensued, during which Patterson allegedly fired at officers, though none were injured. Eventually, he surrendered to the authorities.
