On January 31, 2023, Montgomery police discovered human remains in the 3000 block of Simmons Drive. The remains were identified as those of 54-year-old Eric Stewart, a resident of Montgomery.

The investigation led to the swift arrest of two suspects: 16-year-old Zackell Grove and 26-year-old Wesley Speaks Jr. Both were charged with capital murder and taken into custody within hours of the crime's discovery.
