On a Saturday evening in Mobile, Alabama, on April 8, 2023, Montraze Khalil Slater, a 43-year-old male, was caught in an act of violence that would tragically end his life. While sitting in a vehicle on the 1800 block of Brownlee Street at approximately 9:30 p.m., another vehicle approached. Unseen individuals from within the second vehicle opened fire, striking Slater and another man who was with him.
Both victims were rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Despite medical efforts, Montraze Khalil Slater succumbed to his wounds. His death was officially recorded on April 9, 2023. The second victim in the shooting survived and was reported to be in stable condition. The investigation into the shooting quickly identified a suspect, 37-year-old Joseph Walker. However, the pursuit of justice took a somber turn. Following the incident, officers with the Prichard Police Department discovered Walker in a vehicle on Reynolds Avenue. He had sustained what was determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was deceased. The investigation concluded with the death of the sole suspect, leaving a community to mourn the loss of a beloved figure.
