William Robert Ross, a 42-year-old man, came to Birmingham from Cullman, and whatever brought him to the 3900 block of 36th Avenue North on July 20, 2007, has never been clearly explained in public reporting. By the time the night turned violent, he was in front of an abandoned house in a part of the city where, years later, police would still be asking why he had been there at all.
