In the early morning hours of August 24, 2023, Snir Lalum, a 44-year-old Israeli man, was preparing for another day of work at his Birmingham, Alabama, business, Insta-Movers. A resident of the area for several years, Lalum was known for his generous spirit, often starting his day by taking his employees to a nearby convenience store for food and drinks. On this particular morning, this routine act of kindness would precede a tragic turn of events.
After leaving the convenience store, it is believed he was followed back to his warehouse.
At approximately 5:15 a.m., Birmingham Police Department officers were dispatched to the Insta-Movers warehouse. Upon arrival, they discovered Snir Lalum inside a warehouse bay, suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the immediate life-saving efforts of the responding officers and subsequent transportation to UAB Hospital, Lalum succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 5:50 a.m. The preliminary investigation suggested that one or more unknown suspects approached him at his business and fired the fatal shots.
The investigation into the death of the business owner, who was a husband and father to a six-year-old son, quickly progressed. On September 1, 2023, authorities announced the arrest of 23-year-old Sebastian Ross of Hoover, who was charged with capital murder during a robbery. A second suspect, 20-year-old Jacquz Hoffman of Tallas, was later taken into custody on October 4th by the U.S. Marshal Service. Both men were booked into the Jefferson County Jail on capital murder charges without bond, bringing a measure of resolution to the senseless act of violence that cut short the life of a beloved member of the Birmingham community.
