On a late Saturday evening in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 30-year-old Jerrod Excell Turner was tragically cut short. On November 26, 2022, at approximately 6:50 p.m., Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel responded to a 911 call about a person shot in the 2800 block of 29th Street Southwest.
Upon their arrival, West Precinct officers discovered Turner lying unresponsive in the driveway of what appeared to be an abandoned house.
He had sustained a gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased at the scene. It was a family member who had made the grim discovery of his body and alerted the authorities.
The investigation into Turner's death, which marked the city's 124th homicide investigation of 2022, proceeded for the next two months. On January 26, 2023, detectives with the Birmingham Police Department presented their findings to officials at the Jefferson County Family Court. This led to a pickup order being issued for a 15-year-old male suspect.
The following day, the United States Marshal's Fugitive Task Force successfully apprehended the juvenile suspect. He was then transported to the G. Ross Bell Youth Detention Center. Due to his status as a minor, the suspect's identity has not been publicly released.
