Jaqoin Carpenter, a 24-year-old Black male from Birmingham, Alabama, was shot on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. At approximately 1:15 in the afternoon, Birmingham Police Department's East Precinct officers responded to a Shot Spotter alert at 7701 5th Avenue North. They were subsequently updated that an individual had been shot inside a vehicle in the 500 block of Oporto Madrid Boulevard North.
Upon their arrival at the scene, officers discovered Carpenter unresponsive inside a van, suffering
from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel transported him to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Two days later, on Thursday, January 11, 2024, Jaqoin Carpenter succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
The preliminary investigation by the Birmingham Police Department suggests that Carpenter was inside his vehicle at the intersection of 5th Avenue North and Oporto Madrid Boulevard North when another vehicle pulled alongside his. An unknown suspect or suspects from that vehicle fired shots into Carpenter's van and then fled the scene. As of now, no suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have asked for anyone with information to contact the Birmingham Police Department's Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers.
